Over $6,000 more raised for Astoria Houses families! A recap of our 9/22 Meeting

Dear Parents and Families in the Save for College Community,

Thank you again to everyone who joined us for our third Astoria Houses Community Scholarship Planning Meeting on Tuesday! For the third time, we met to discuss our two community-wide efforts to support the first, second, and third graders with NYC Scholarship Accounts in Astoria Houses:
  • Raising $1,000 for each child with an NYC Scholarship Account – Community Scholarship Campaign
  • Supporting Friends & Neighbors to Complete the Save for College Program Building Blocks
Here’s a quick recap of the meeting:
  • Our icebreaker this week focused on mentors who have guided us in our lives. We also talked about our goals for attending these organizing meetings, and what we’d like to achieve in our time together.
  • The main focus of our conversation was on how we can reach out to the Astoria Houses families who haven’t yet activated their children’s NYC Scholarship Accounts. We talked about how the Save for College Program is one of many resources available to support families in the Astoria Houses community, and how it provides a structure for families to network with one another as we all save for college together.

Astoria Houses Scholarship Funds – By The Numbers

Raising $1,000 for each child with an NYC Scholarship Account – Community Scholarship Campaign
+$6,830
Since our last meeting on September 8, the Tenants Organization has raised another $6,830 for their Community Scholarship Campaign, for a total of $115,424 raised to date. We are just $18,576 away from reaching our goal of raising $1,000 for every child in Astoria Houses with an NYC Scholarship Account!
Supporting Friends & Neighbors to Complete the Save for College Program Building Blocks
+$240
Also in the past two weeks, 6 more families have activated their child’s NYC Scholarship Accounts, and 4 families have opened their own college savings account, deposited their first $5, and began receiving the Savings Match, earning a total of $240 more for their children’s accounts. We are now down to $19,635 left on the table for Astoria Houses families who have not yet completed the Building Blocks. If you or someone you know would like help completing the Building Blocks and earning those rewards, please contact Arli at (718) 593-0338 or call the NYC Kids RISE hotline at (833) 543-7473.
Next Steps:
  • Complete the Building Blocks and let your neighbors know about the almost $20,000 in scholarship money still left on the table. If you or someone you know would like help completing the Building Blocks and earning those rewards, please contact Arli at (718) 593-0338 or call the NYC Kids RISE hotline at (833) 543-7473.
  • Help us plan the Community Scholarship announcement on Tuesday, October 6! We are close to reaching our goal and announcing the $1,000 Community Scholarship. At our next meeting, we will brainstorm ideas for how to share the exciting news with other families in the program. Mark your calendars, invite a friend, and join us on Zoom here.
Best,
